London is an acknowledged centre for marketing activity with both end users and agencies operating. The capital provides a vibrant market place for digital marketing jobs and vacancies and offers some unrivalled career opportunities. Our focus tends to be on internal company departments, heads and directors as we find that is where the best talent is to be found.
Having said that marketing is such a broad area. That does lead to a wide variation on the packages on offer depending on actual job role.
What is sure is that marketing is now finally assuming the importance that it has long deserved. Certainly in Digital Marketing a head of such a department can expect to see a package (including bonus) of circa £90k. That would probably include a basic of around £65k. And, this is one area where companies very much like to hire permanent members of staff, although skills shortages are meaning more contract roles are available.
A department head role is certainly a strategic hire, and that is why we see far more permanent vacancies for this type of job. Indeed a Digital Marketing department head is having to add new skills to his or her portfolio all the time. There is no doubt that the techniques and tools available to the digital marketer are advancing at a rapid rate. This can be in terms of the software (and its functionality) or indeed the actual marketing techniques employed. As a department head it is key that you are fully aware and engaged with what is happening in your market place.
Every opportunity for competitive advantage needs to be taken in a world where attention spans are falling rapidly.
At Director level we would expect to see the salary exceed the six figure barrier. However, only the best get hired at these levels and if you’re a candidate looking to move you will have to demonstrate a clear record of success over an extended period.
One niche within this area that is always alive and kicking, particularly as the market is now very much in the ascendancy, is start-ups. We are seeing a massive increase in the number of products being brought to market and business evolving in to new areas, such as app development and deployment. A successful app launch can be worth many millions. A Marketing Manager is always one of the first hires. In situations like this expect to see a lower salary (to reduce start-up risk), but generous schemes on offer for shares and ownership.
