There are certain question types which will inevitably crop up in just about any interview scenario with the typical “Why do you want to work here” being the most obvious.

The reason behind this is fairly transparent too – the interviewer is actively looking for signs that indicate you’ve thought long and hard about your motivations for wanting the role and are not going to waste the business’s time. Preparing your response by conducting thorough research on the company, products and sector are therefore an absolute pre-requisite before heading into an interview.

Here are a few ideas to formulate your response, bearing in mind that it’s best to pick one and elaborate on it as opposed to giving a long list of varying examples. The key is to clearly demonstrate that you are well prepared, highly informed and passionate about their company.

1) Be specific

Have actual examples of what the company has done in the past or is actively doing that excites you and makes you want to be a part of. It could be a ground breaking product launch, or a cultural event which has received some press coverage. Whatever it is you need to align your own passion with something the organisation has done (or is doing) to show you are meant to be part of their team.

2) Reference your own personal view or experience with the company

Talk insightfully about your own understanding of the brand before you applied of the role, any positive encounters you’ve had or what your initial impressions were. Your objective here is to show you thought highly of the company long before the role became available and you’ve followed their evolution and success story with interest.

3) Highlight opportunities

Approach this area carefully, it is not a good idea to talk about the company’s short fallings or what you would’ve done in certain situations but it is an opportunity to show where you could add value or what opportunities you’ve identified for the future. Demonstrating foresight indicates you’ve metaphorically put yourself into the role and can believably envision ways to drive growth, revenue and achieve success for the business. Again have actual examples that are believable and relevant to the role and avoid pitching unrealistic deliverables.

4) Make it personal

If all else fails and you’re at a loss at how to answer this question share how impressed you are with other employees views of the business. You may be able to get feedback from a friend or contact within the business or could look for an opportunity to chat to an employee on your way to the interview. Let the interviewer know you are being selective about where you want to work and you’re not just going to take any job offered to you and that this role is the one you have been waiting for. If you do have an opportunity to share your positive impression and personal reasons for wanting the role then this is the way to do so.

5) Have a strong close

Whatever your response to this interview question may be, you need to ensure you align your own skills, personality and experience objectively with your answers. Your interview is a sales pitch about why you are the best in your category so work the interview to ensure the potential employer has to have you above anyone else. Your natural, sincere response which is unique to the role should leave a lasting impression on the interviewer and ensure your stand hand and shoulders above other candidates they’re meeting.
