Talent and Hiring Data 2017 – eCommerce and Digital Sector


Intelligent People work with the UK digital talent pool, partnering with Digital and eCommerce businesses, identifying and engaging the best possible talent to support their business growth. For the 2nd year we have conducted in depth analysis of placements within the Digital & eCommerce sector and are delighted to present our findings.

In short, the UK digital economy continues to grow at two and a half times the rate of the wider economy, contributing more than £100BN a year. The result is a continuing rise in the number of jobs in digital tech as well as expected wage inflation; great news for those building a career in digital tech but again presenting challenges to employers as to how best attract and retain talent.

In terms of changes from 2016, placements in Disruptive Consumer Services are up from 26% to 54%, whilst eCommerce has contracted from 46% to 27%, suggesting eCommerce has become a more mature market whereas Disruptive Consumer Services is still in aggressive growth mode.

A degree is still pretty much a pre-requisite these days, with a Redbrick or Russell Group being advantageous and accounting for roughly a third of placements.

Salaries have continued to grow with placements under £40K becoming increasingly rare (15% for 2017, down from 27% the previous year) whereas the £60K – £80K bracket has grown from 25% to 32% and £100K+ placements are also on the up.

Whilst the gender divide is static in terms of placement volume the general growth in salary is strongly weighted towards women, narrowing the wage gap.
